tip of the trade: may 2006

What makes a great website

1. Useful content

You can have the most beautiful site on the web, with all kinds of pictures, graphical effects and gimmicks, but if the content isn't interesting and relevant, no-one will care! Computer screens are typically only read at 28% of normal reading speed- so keep content relevant and to the point. Most people scan a page, stopping at links and key graphics. Make each link the center of the thought.

2. Visually attractive

A first impression is made in seconds, so it's vital to have an attractive design. Use graphics that reinforce your message, avoid gimmicks. Keep the design consistent, clean and simple, to balance creativity with function and usability. Remember the old adage - less is more.

3. Functionality

There are certain features that people have come to expect from e-commerce sites – security, comprehensive shopping cart system, wish lists, instant order confirmation, order tracking etc. If you plan to sell from your website, you'll need to keep up with all these technologies.

4. Easy navigation structure

Navigation structure must be consistent across all pages. You should always aim for a minimal number of clicks between the customer and the information or product they need

5. Interactivity

Good sites make the audience want to interact with them – use leading content and links, attractive graphics and most of all interesting content and or products. Solicite feedback from your browsers. You can learn more about your target audience, and they feel like someone is taking their opinion into consideration!
